The Odyssey

From Hero's Journey Text Set

Homer. (2003). The Odyssey. (George Herbert Palmer, Trans.) New York: Barnes & Noble Classics/Barnes & Noble Books. (Original text written in 8th Century B.C.E. Translation first published 1921.)

The Odyssey follows Homer’s hero Odysseus as he journeys home to Ithaca after the end of the Trojan War. All of the obstacles that Odysseus must overcome are described in great detail. As one of the first known examples of Western writing, The Odyssey serves as the perfect model for the Hero’s Journey. Students may find the prose hard to follow, which is why the story of Odysseus can be supplemented with more modern renderings of the Hero’s Journey.
